Chairman's Message

The Royal Care Super Speciality Hospital has state-of-the-art medical equipment and cutting-edge technologies. Renowned for its pioneering role in introducing the latest advancements in the medical field to the nation, the hospital offers the Magnetic Resonance Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) treatment for essential tremors and Parkinson's disease. This advanced procedure is administered by a team of highly skilled and experienced neurosurgeons and neurologists who have received specialized training in the focused ultrasound technique, enabling them to target sub-millimeter areas in the brain precisely.

MRgFUS, an innovative technology, has the potential to revolutionize the treatment of movement disorders. Historically, tremors have been managed with various medications, yielding limited efficacy. Nevertheless, MRgFUS has received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) in India and the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for treating essential tremors and Parkinson's disease.

Magnetic Resonance Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a noninvasive treatment modality for individuals with Parkinson's disease who exhibit resistance to pharmacological interventions. This innovative approach integrates Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Ultrasound technologies to achieve therapeutic outcomes.

Focused Ultrasound represents a noninvasive treatment modality offering tremor control without surgical incisions. This procedure involves the precise targeting of ultrasound waves to a specific area within the brain responsible for generating tremors under the guidance of MRI imaging. The initial application of low energy facilitates patient feedback regarding any sensations, reduction in tremors, and potential side effects, enabling the physician to make personalized adjustments to the treatment target. Subsequently, a gradual escalation of energy levels creates a small therapeutic lesion.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offers a comprehensive, high-resolution anatomical assessment of the treatment area, facilitating the development of tailored treatment plans for individual patients. Its real-time thermometry capability enables monitoring of temperature changes, thereby facilitating precise adjustments to the treatment target. Additionally, MRI provides intra-operative T2 weighted MR images to verify complete ablation.

Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS) has received approval for treating Essential Tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD) in India. Numerous patients have reported immediate tremor improvement with minimal temporary complications.

To date, over 15,000 patients globally have undergone successful MRgFUS treatment for Essential Tremor and Parkinson's disease. In India, this treatment is available only at Royal Care Hospital, Coimbatore which has successfully treated more than 100 patients till date.
